LAS VEGAS, N.M. (AP) - New Mexico Highlands University regents say the school will keep its rodeo and wrestling programs - at least for now.
Supporters had objected last month to a recommendation that the programs be eliminated to help alleviate the school's tight finances.
The supporters turned to San Jose Democratic state Senator Phil Griego, who says he's confident he will be able to get funds for the programs in next year's Legislature.
Griego says Gov. Bill Richardson - who created a rodeo initiative program a couple of years ago - is giving funds from the initiative to Highlands.
The president of the Las Vegas university, James Fries, says he hopes the Legislature will fund the programs, and this isn't just a one-year reprieve.
