Voters will have two separate issues to vote on
AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Voters of Oldham County have an important election coming up, they'll be voting on a controversial school bond issue, but they'll also be voting on two separate alcohol issues as well.
Voters brought a petition to county commissioners with the required signatures which forced the issue on the ballot. Nearly 250 signatures were gathered which represented at least 10% of the voting population from the last gubernatorial election in Oldham County.
Two separate items will appear on the ballot. One will ask voters whether alcohol sales on-premise will be allowed for restaurants or bars. The other item will ask voters if off-premise alcohol sales will be allowed for package or convenient stores.
Officials say that voter apathy must not show up this election day, with an election like this every vote counts.
"This is an election where your vote at the ballot has a tremendous impact because it only affects the voters within our county borders," said Oldham County Judge, Don Allred.
"I want the voters of Oldham County to know that they need to take a voice in government, they need to let their voice be heard, and the only way to do that is to go to the polls and vote your conscious," said Judge Allred.
To his knowledge, Oldham County has always been dry. A few years ago, one precinct in Oldham County was voted wet which allowed Tommy's in Adrian to operate.
Keep in mind all four precincts in Vega will be combined to vote at the county barn. In addition to Vega, the county-wide election impacts Adrian, Wildorado, and Cal Farley's Boys Ranch. Community centers in those communities will serve as the voting location.
"I think the intriguing part is where do we want the direction of our community to go? That is the question voters will decide on May, 8th," said Judge Allred.
Also on the ballot for May, 8th is a controversial school bond election that may have more interest than the alcohol issues. The last time a school bond election went to Oldham County voters it failed.
