AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - A flip of his hand sends crumpled paper into a trash barrel as country music great George Strait is the latest celebrity in the "Don't Mess with Texas" no-litter campaign.

The public service announcements began airing statewide Monday as part of the Texas Department of Transportation effort.

The 30-second spot shows Strait, seated in a director's-type chair on a highway, being pitched campaign possibilities such as using a glitzy jacket, gawdy boots and even a pony.

Strait finally stands, tosses a wad of paper into a red, white and blue-decorated barrel and says "Don't Mess with Texas means don't litter."

The first "Don't Mess with Texas" PSA aired in 1986 and featured blues guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan.

Strait, who was born in Poteet (poh-TEET'), turns 58 on May 18. ---
