OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Gov. Brad Henry has declared a state of emergency in 56 Oklahoma counties after an outbreak of tornadoes and severe storms that raked the state.

Henry also on Thursday issued an executive order exempting utility trucks and other vehicles involved in restoration efforts from weight and permit requirements.

The emergency declaration is the first step toward seeking federal assistance. Meanwhile, emergency management officials are preparing preliminary assessments to determine the extent of the damage.
