ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - The consul of Mexico in Albuquerque says he's concerned about Albuquerque's decision to check the immigration status of every person arrested in New Mexico's largest city.
Consul Gustavo De Unanue says he worries it could led to human rights or civil rights violations toward immigrants.
He says the concern is not due to the strict new guidelines, but rather is based on what he calls unfortunate experiences in neighboring states when similar measures aimed at fighting organized crime resulted in abuses.
Albuquerque Mayor Richard Berry says the policy has nothing to do with immigration law.
The city's new prisoner processing facility will have a station for federal agents to check prisoners' immigration status.
De Unanue says most Mexicans in New Mexico are hardworking people who contribute to the community.
