AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott has ruled that school districts have no authority to help teachers and educators direct donations to political groups, including those run by employee unions.
Currently, school districts allow educators to send payroll deductions to political action committees that then give those dollars to candidates running for elective office.
Republican legislators, citing the ruling, called on school districts Monday to stop processing payroll deductions that support political groups. They say Democrats benefit most.
GOP State Rep. Leo Berman of Tyler vowed to file a lawsuit if school districts don't stop processing the payments.
