AMARILLO,TEXAS -- With all our recent rainfall, the mosquito population is ready to explode and Amarillo city employees are out trying to stop them before they get out of control.

Earlier this month, the city's Environmental Health Department began spraying standing water, like Wildhorse Lake, trying to kill off the larvae before they hatch.

By spraying and having citizens help out around their homes, officials hope they can keep the mosquitoes in check.

"We are out concentrating on spraying this week, treating all the areas with standing water...and if you will check your property, check for containers with water, tip them and toss that water out, you'll save you and your neighbors a lot of misery from being bitten by mosquitoes," according to Deree Duke with the Amarillo Environmental Health Department.

Duke adds they can't get them all, and wearing insect repellent with deet is still the best way to keep mosquitoes from biting you.
