WACO, Texas (AP) - A pilot from Waco whose single-engine plane apparently had mechanical trouble ditched the aircraft in Lake Whitney and safely swam to shore.

The Texas Department of Public Safety says 33-year-old Johnny Carter took off from Waco Regional Airport on Tuesday night, then started having engine trouble.

Carter managed to land on the lake, with the plane sinking in an area known as Loafer's Bend, near Lake Whitney Dam.

Searchers on Wednesday planned to try to locate the plane. The area is about 30 miles northwest of Waco.
