WASHINGTON (AP) - The Food and Drug Administration would begin publicizing safety problems with the drugs it rejects under a sweeping proposal to bring greater transparency to an agency that regulates everything from pacemakers to peanut butter.

A report from the agency suggests 21 ways the FDA could release more information to the public in areas like drug evaluation and food manufacturing inspections. The effort is part of a broader plan to rebrand the FDA as a more accessible agency after years of criticism.

The FDA has long operated under strict confidentiality rules because its scientists handle reams of proprietary information from food, drug and device companies.

However, the FDA's operating style has come under fire for being too secretive.
