AMARILLO,TEXAS -- A local elementary school student has won some national recognition and will soon be a published author.

Robert Kimmerly a 4th grade student at Lakeview Elementary won the national Dalton Gage James Picture Book Contest. He wrote and illustrated the book "My Dragon, Thelonius" winning him top honors. He will soon be a published author as the book is on its way to the publisher and it set to be sold on  Amazon.com and  barnesandnoble.com.

Robert wrote the story for Mrs. Stewart's writing class about his search for his lost pet dragon. In the story, the character gave up the search and returned home feeling defeated, only to discover his pet dragon had returned and was waiting for him in the backyard.

Robert spent hours revising and editing his story, then creating beautiful paintings for illustrations before submitting his finished piece.

Five other 4th grade students from Lakeview Elementary School also entered the contest.
