ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - The chairman of the New Mexico Republican Party has interjected himself into a squabble over negative campaign ads by the two apparent frontrunners in the GOP gubernatorial primary.
Harvey Yates Jr. says in a news release Sunday that complaints by several Republicans prompted him to put together a committee to look at the ads being run by Susana Martinez and Allen Weh.
Yates says the committee found documents furnished by Martinez's campaign "reasonably supported" her ad against Weh, but that documents outlined by Weh's campaign "did not reasonably support either his radio or TV ad."
Martinez's campaign manager says the party's analysis speaks for itself.
Weh's campaign manager says the campaign stands by the ad's accuracy.
Typically, state parties steer clear of taking sides in a primary election.
