SUGAR LAND, Texas (AP) - A suspect is dead and a deputy and a bystander are wounded after a rolling gun battle begun with a suburban Houston bank heist.
It started with the Saturday holdup of a Bank of America near Sugar Land. Fort Bend County Chief Deputy Craig Brady says Deputy Charlie Scott saw a van matching the description of the getaway vehicle and tried to stop it, but a man flung open its rear doors and fired an assault-style rifle.
Scott was wounded in the wrist and grazed in the head. During a 20-minute car chase and gun battle, a stray bullet wounded a woman in the side as she drove her three children in a pickup truck.
Brady says Scott and the woman were expected to recover, and the children weren't injured. He says the van finally crashed through a fence and the gunman was killed by deputies. Another man in the van was arrested.
