HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP) - Freed from jail after posting bond on a charge of molesting a 12-year-old girl, John Alba headed to a Plano pawn shop to buy a gun.

He told the clerk it was for his wife's protection.

By the end of the day, his 28-year-old wife, Wendy, was fatally shot at an apartment northeast of Dallas. And the next morning Alba was threatening to kill himself, holding the gun to his head as a police SWAT team set up near him at the parking lot of a shopping strip.

On Tuesday, the 54-year-old Alba is set to die in Huntsville for gunning down his wife almost 19 years ago.

He would be the 11th inmate executed this year in the nation's most active death penalty state.
