BROWNSVILLE, Texas (AP) - A teen who pleaded guilty to killing a neighborhood puppy in Brownsville has been sentenced to 18 months in state jail.

A judge on Thursday sentenced 19-year-old Mario Alberto Gasca, who pleaded guilty to cruelty to non-livestock animals. A count of tampering with evidence was dropped as part of the plea agreement.

Gasca, who's been jailed in Cameron County for more than 100 days, will get credit for time served.

Another teen faces trial over the December death of the dog. Police say the animal had been kicked and stabbed.
