AMARILLO,TEXAS -- With Memorial Day weekend comes the opening of area swimming pools, and the Department of Family and Protective Services urges parents to keep a close eye on their children.
Every year more than 100 children in Texas die due to an accidental drowning, and so far 31 children have already died this year.
Reports indicate that the peak period that most drownings occur are Memorial Day through Labor Day.
"It's not just pools and lakes and bodies of water, I mean we're talking about anything - bathtubs. In fact every year we have dozens of kids drown in Texas in bathtubs. So, anytime you got standing water you've got to keep your children away from it and you got to keep an eye on them," says Greg Cunningham of DFPS.
He also says that even though flotation devices and fences can decrease the possibilities of drowning adult supervision should always be given.
