CANYON,TEXAS -- A pastor who has been shepherding a flock in Canyon for the last ten years will soon be saying goodbye. Pastor David Lowrie and his family will pack their bags and leave town Thursday for El Paso. Lowrie gave his last sermon to the First Baptist Church of Canyon this past Sunday.
Lowrie will be the new pastor of the First Baptist Church of El Paso starting Sunday. He says he will miss his church, friends and the beauty of the Panhandle, but this opportunity is calling his name. He plans on bringing whatever peace he can to the border town of Juarez.
Lowrie also says that about 100,000 soldiers and their families will be moving to El Paso over the next twelve months, so that encouraged his decision as well.
"We're convinced that police and army's and government's will never be the solution to the kind of problems we face, and that it's only through people loving each other, a new sense of community, and from my prospective the influence of God that you can see huge change happen in places like El Paso and that's part of the reason we're going," said Lowrie.
Lowrie says he and his family have not found a home yet, but have found the area they would like to reside in. He hopes to find a place to call home this weekend.
