GALVESTON, Texas (AP) - Authorities say a man who was shot and killed by Galveston police approached an officer with a butcher knife.

Authorities say 38-year-old Jeffrey Kilton Joyce died after being shot Sunday by Galveston police Lt. Joel Caldwell.

Police had responded to a call about a suicidal person at an apartment. Police spokesman Capt. Jeff Heyse says that as police tried to enter the residence, an officer saw the man with a knife.

Heyse tells The Galveston County Daily News, "He came at the officer in a threatening manner. And the officer opened fire."

Heyse says Joyce was shot twice in the chest.

Galveston County Assistant District Attorney Larry A. Drosnes says his office and the Galveston County Sheriff's Office will investigate the shooting.
