SILVER CITY, N.M. (AP) - A man digging in his yard in southwestern New Mexico uncovered a human skull that medical investigators say is ancient.
A field deputy for the state Office of the Medical Investigator, Melissa Arzaga, says the Santa Clara resident was building forms to pour concrete last week when he hit something hard while digging about seven feet down.
He called police when he pulled up a skull, with roots twined through the eye sockets.
Another OMI field deputy, Mike Barragree, says the skull was sent to Albuquerque for further study.
On Monday, the OMI determined the skull was of ancient origin.
A spokeswoman for the office, Amy Boule, says such findings are fairly common in New Mexico because it had so many ancient cultures.
