ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - An Albuquerque City Councilor wants a ban on electronic billboards because they're a traffic nuisance and they don't look good.

City Councilor Isaac Benton introduced a bill Monday that calls for a ban on any new electronic billboard ads until December of this year.

In the meantime, Benton wants a study done, to see if the ads are causing more driver distractions and crashes.

If the ban is approved, existing ads will stay, and ads in the process of being sold will still be put up on the billboards, but new sales won't happen until the study is finished.

The proposal is expected to be put to a final vote at the next city council meeting in two weeks.

When reached by The Associated Press Tuesday, Clear Channel Outdoor in Albuquerque had no comment.
