A pair of insurance companies are getting some attention from the Texas Department of Insurance due to a high number of complaints.
The companies, Old American County Mutual and Fred Loya have received 3 to 4 times the number of complaints compared to most average insurance companies in the state.
There are a host of reasons the two companies have been filed on, and the numbers are starting to add up. According to the Dallas Morning News the complaints include delays in processing claims, unsatisfactory offers or settlements, denial of claims, and liability issues.
State Representative John Smithee, who chairs the insurance committee, says there are options for people who feel they've been wronged by an insurance company.
"If companies are behaving this way, where they're not making fair settlements of claims that aren't in dispute, then the Insurance Department needs to be aware of this because they do keep statistics and pretty soon, the companies start to show up as a bad actor, and then the department will step in and try to get involved in that situation."
Smithee says while the state cannot address individual cases, he is hoping to introduce legislation that would speed up insurance claims.
Calls made to a local Loya office were not returned.
