ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - New Mexico's most populous county has banned such fireworks as bottle rockets, missile-type rockets and aerial spinners.
Bernalillo County commissioners approved the ban Tuesday for unincorporated areas of the county because of severe drought conditions and the potential risk to property and life.
The ban remains in force for 30 days.
County officials say other permissible types of fireworks are allowed on barren or paved areas. Those fireworks include cones, fountains and hand-held sparklers.
Aerial and ground audible devices are not allowed anywhere in Bernalillo County.
Violations are punishable by a fine of up to $1,000 and possible jail time.
