AMARILLO, TEXAS -- This past weekend Pronews 7 told you about fake money that was being passed around the city. Police say that at least one more $100 counterfeit bill was recovered on Monday. The serial number is the same as the two reported over the weekend.
Some of those bill recovered over the weekend came from local garage sales. Proving that not only businesses are at risk, individuals are also.
Amarillo Police have a few tips to offer to help you from becoming a victim of counterfeit cash.
"We want homeowners and businesses as well to check 2 or 3 of those security features to make sue that it is a good bill. If you'd hold that bill up to a bright light you should see a water-mark of that same person on the front of that bill. There's a security thread that's embedded in the bill and if it's a $50 bill it will literally say USA fifty and repeated across that bill. Probably one of the easiest things to look for are the color-shifting ink. On the bottom right hand corner of all the newer denominations of bills is the written out number of fifty or whatever - generally when you look at it face on it may be gold or green but when you turn it at an angle it'll turn to a black. So, you know if you look at it and it's green and you turn it to the side a little bit and it's still green that could be a indication it's a counterfeit bill," said Cpl. Jerry Neufeld of APD.
The suspect has not been apprehended. She is described as Hispanic, about 5'6" and around 100 pounds. Police also say the fake cash is described as slick or almost waxy.
The APD is urging you to check your cash and call them at 378-3038, if you believe you have any funny money. Also if you have taken counterfeit money, obtain a description of the person that passes it, record their car description and license plate information.
