LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - Police in Las Cruces are investigating an accident Monday evening after two pedestrians were hit by a car.

Police were called to the intersection of University Avenue and El Paseo Road after a 47-year-old woman and a 51-year-old man were hit. Both were transported in critical condition to a local hospital and then to University Medical Center of El Paso.

The 26-year-old driver of the vehicle was being interviewed by police. Two passengers in the vehicle fled and have yet to be identified.

Traffic investigators have learned the pedestrians were crossing University Avenue southbound when they were struck by the vehicle that was headed westbound on University Avenue.

Police say weather conditions and alcohol may be contributing factors in the crash.
