AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Rattlesnakes are no stranger to the Texas Panhandle, especially during the summer months.
If you own a pet you may not be aware of a vaccine that could possibly save your four legged friend's life. It's called the rattlesnake vaccine and it's been available for a couple of years now. The vaccine is specially made to protect from the Western Diamondback snake. But whether or not the vaccine really works has yet to be scientifically proven.
"If I felt like my dogs were at high risk - I would use it. I would not use it if I didn't feel that they were at high risk. So, people have to kinda decide if it's worth it or not and they still certainly recommend getting the dog treated if envenomation has occurred - you don't say, oh well they've had the vaccine - cool, let's keep on," said Veterinarian Rob Ballinger.
Veterinarians say that owners of search and rescue dogs, and bird dogs have found the vaccine useful. One of the potential side effect are abscesses.
The vaccine costs about $25 and the shots are given twice to begin with and then once every year after that. If you would like to know more about the vaccine you should contact your vet.
