AMARILLO, TEXAS -- The Amarillo Police Department is gearing up for the holiday weekend, by putting extra officers on the street. The extra officers will be working to curb the problem with intoxicated drivers this July 4th holiday.
The city has received a grant, Impaired Driving Mobilization, from the Texas Department of Transportation to fund these extra officers.
The officers will begin patrolling Thursday night and will continue strict enforcement through Monday morning. The holiday often involves travel and celebrations. The APD encourages everyone to act responsibly by making advanced plans on having a designated driver.
So far this year, there have been 13 people in the city killed in 12 separate traffic wrecks. Of those 12 fatal accidents, 7 of them involved alcohol and/or narcotics.
