SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - Smaller communities have been among the fastest-growing in New Mexico this decade, and the village of Cuba leads the pack, according to the Census Bureau.
Cuba had a population of nearly 1,400 as of July 2009. It's grown 75 percent since 2000, the Census Bureau reported in its latest population estimates for incorporated places in New Mexico - big and small.
Cuba's growth is greater than the 59 percent population increase in Rio Rancho, a city of more than 82,000 near Albuquerque.
Of the top 15 fastest-growing communities in New Mexico from 2000 to 2009, six had populations of less than 3,000.
