(AP) -- RENO, Nev. (AP) - Activists working with financial help from oil tycoon T. Boone Pickens and others bought all 174 horses up for sale today at a state-sanctioned auction in Nevada. Their goal was to keep the animals out of the slaughterhouse.
The horses had been rounded up by a federal agency last month and turned over to the Nevada Department of Agriculture for disposal.
