AMARILLO, TEXAS -- The 101st National Convention for the NAACP kicked off today in Kansas City, Missouri. Among the many guests that are expected to show up, even a few people from the panhandle are making the trip.

President Barack Obama is also scheduled to address the convention.

The convention will focus on topics such as unemployment, joblessness, and medical insurance to name a few. Texas will have delegates in Missouri to represent our area and address issues such as redistricting.

But the NAACP wants to tackle one situation that affects the whole nation. "A lot of young people don't see there is a need for the NAACP until there allegations that has been in the newspapers here lately about police brutality or allegations of police harrassment and then the interest of the younger generation seem to peak so I'm hoping we'll be able to find some new ways of recruiting and retention of younger member for the organization," said Floyd Anthony, the Amarillo Branch President of the NAACP.

Anthony says that the purpose of the NAACP is to advance the economic, civil, and political rights of all people.
