SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - The New Mexico Route 66 Motor Tour gets under way late this month.

The Route 66 Association of New Mexico expects up to 150 vehicles - classic to contemporary - to travel from Tucumcari to Gallup.

Communities along the route have planned festivities ranging from car shows to sidewalk sales to barbecue cookoffs.

The tour starts July 23 in Tucumcari, then heads west to Albuquerque the next day, following the old Route 66 alignment.

The tour then will head to Gallup July 25, where it concludes with Indian dances and awards.

The president of the Route 66 Association of New Mexico, Vickie Ashcraft, says the idea is to promote tourism by showcasing New Mexico's segment of what was called the Mother Road.
