CURRY COUNTY, NEW MEXICO -- Channel 7 spoke with the Curry County Manager, Chair, Two District judges, and the architect involved in a potential $33 million master plan for the Judicial Complex in New Mexico.
The group all agrees, this complex will put the county at current standards because right now they're behind and not satisfying the current needs of taxpayers.
The first step of the plan would renovate and expand the courthouse, offices, detention center, among other key locations. The Courthouse was built in the 30's, and was virtually unchanged except for an extension in the 50's.
If passed and completed, it would satisfy the needs of the county up to 2025. "So there hasn't been any major renovation to this building in almost half a century. And we, when the courthouse was built there was only one district judge for two counties and now we have five. We need more courtroom space, we need more safety opportunities for people that attend court functions and we need to upgrade and bring it into the 21st century," said District Judge Stephen Quinn.
On August third, the County Commission will decide what to place on the November ballot. They're looking for a quarter percent of gross receipts tax, along with asking taxpayers to use the about $16 million in general obligation bonds.
Currently the county just has planning images, those can be found on their website.
