AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Recently Gov. Rick Perry asked all state agencies to reduce their budget by five percent. The Texas Agrilife Extension was one of those agencies affected by those cuts. In a statement released Wednesday, the Extension office cut 94 positions in the state of Texas. Of those positions eliminated 46 of those are on the county level. Our area was affected with one position being lost in District 1 which includes the top 22 counties in the Texas panhandle. That posisition was the Deaf Smith Extension position for 4-H and Youth Development.
The remaining two positions in Deaf Smith County, Extension Agents for Agriculture and for Family and Consumer Sciences, will assume the responsibilities of the youth program. They will be assisted by excellent county support staff members.
It is important to note that 4-H in Deaf Smith county won't go away. The other agents in that office will take over those duties, no one lost their job, the position was vacant and won't be filled.
