PAMPA, TEXAS -- It seems more and more child sexual abuse cases get reported everyday. But our schools are now coming up with plans to address that problem.
Because of new state education laws, the Pampa Independent School District has created a committee to com up with methods for increasing awareness regarding sexual abuse. Now teachers and staff in Pampa will be training annually to recognize the signs of abuse in children.
"Most children who are being abused, whether it's physically, emotionally, or sexually give clues and if we're aware of those clues, if we're open to them, uh, if we realize that this is a good student academically who's not performing well, and start trying to get to the bottom of it, then uh, then it can only benefit our schools and it can only benefit those children," said Pampa ISD Superintendent, Barry Haenisch.
Students in elementary and junior high will go through programs over sexual predators and abuse through counselors. High school students will be provided information through physical education and health classes.
