AMARILLO, TEXAS -- A new state regulation requires middle and high school students to take one fine arts credit, starting this school year. So, how will this new requirement affect local school districts?
Canyon ISD officials say the requirement is nothing new they've had that policy for some time now.
However, Amarillo ISD officials say they don't require middle school students to take a fine arts class. But most students take them anyway.
"At middle school we don't have an awful lot of elective choices, so the choices we have are fine arts, theater, band, and instrumental so all those are fine art credits so the students are doing that now they just don't realize it," said Paula Ward, AISD Dir. Of Guidance and Counseling.
Because of the new requirement Ward says they've hired a new theater arts teacher at Crockett.
