AMARILLO, TEXAS -- We interviewed Texas Workforce Commission Chairman Tom Pauken on our show at 6 p.m.and he spoke about unemployment in the Lone Star State.
Overall, Pauken said the national economy is having adverse effects on ours, but Amarillo still has one of the best unemployment numbers in the state at about 6%. Pauken credits our commodity prices for that low number even though in recent months unemployment has been rising.
"The Panhandle went up a little bit from last month, but that's really probably because of uh, the summer months in terms of the schools and college there was a decline in jobs there. Uh, but overall you're in very good shape," said Tom Pauken, the Texas Workforce Commission Chairman. And Pauken says part of our good fortune is alternative energy, like wind power, coming into our area.
