AMARILLO, TEXAS -- The City of Amarillo has a proposed budget for next year and in it, a possible tax increase. That $41,800,000 budget proposal was presented at a meeting Wednesday. As part of the proposal, tax payers see a small property tax increase. We're told it would be a very small increase, and that a homeowner who owns a $100,000 house would be paying $7.00 more a year. However, one commissioner says he feels that tax hike is unnecessary because our economy is still soft.

"The tax hike that's been proposed is so small, but I, me, myself think we'll come with no increase in taxes. In other words, your taxes will remain the same as they were last year, unless your house has gone up in value.", says Commissioner Jim Simms, City of Amarillo.

Also at the meeting, the city discussed giving firefighters and police officers a 2% pay increase. But remember, this is all in preliminary stages. The city still has plenty of future discussions to iron out the details.
