AMARILLO, TEXAS -- A brand new procedure is now available in Amarillo and it's helping patients see things in a different light.
Eye surgeon, Dr. Sloan Rush performed the first corneal transplant of its kind in Amarillo Friday.
It's called DSEK for short and Dr. Rush says its important because out of our five senses vision is our most precious one.
"It's one of those things you take for granted when you have bad vision and all the sudden you can't read or you can't drive anymore. It's it can be very debilitating and...ultimately recovering the vision is what can kind of get you active again and back to work and do all the things that you need to do."
Dr. Rush is the only eye surgeon in Amarillo qualified to do this type of procedure. Before he began performing the surgery patients would have to travel as far as Houston to get the surgery done.
