AMARILLO, TEXAS -- The Texas Department of Transportation, police departments, and sheriff's offices are working together in a statewide effort to reduce impaired driving this summer and during the upcoming labor day weekend.
From August 20 to September 6 law enforcement will be working overtime in the Drink, Drive, Go to Jail Campaign, to find and arrest impaired drivers. While that campaign has been around for years, the way they are approaching it is changing. In the new ads on billboards or TV you can expect to see the slogan "Choose Your Ride." The idea is you can either choose a taxi or a police car its your choice. If you choose to call a taxi, you can save yourself a lot of money and possibly a life. If you decide to get behind the wheel after you have been drinking you can expect to take a ride in the back of a police car.
With this campaign, TxDOT hopes to raise awareness of the consequences of a DWI conviction, including the costly legal fees and something that can never be paid back.
"You will go to jail ok, and not only that but after that your going to lose your drivers license, you're going to have to hire an attorney, you're going to have to take your car to the impound, you're going to have to get bail money. It can go upwards of $17,000 or more. Ok, but while you have the monetary cost there's also real cost of course which is lives," said DPS Trooper Gabriel Medrano.
The best way to avoid all of that is to just stay put or call someone you can trust for a ride.
