A 22-month old baby girl was shot in the head Thursday evening.
Amarillo Police say that around 9:30, officers responded to a home in the 2400 block of N. Redwood on a report of a child being shot. When they arrived they found that the little girl had a gunshot wound to the head, and the adults in the house were performing CPR.
The young girl was taken to a local hospital where she underwent surgery and is currently listed in extremely critical condition.
The Special Crimes Unit was notified and began its investigation along with Child Protective Services. Investigators determined that children in the house found a loaded revolver in a closet and began to play with it. A single shot was fired by a child under 10 years-old. There were two adults present at the time of the incident, but they were outside when it happened.
Due to the child being less than 10 years of age they are not criminally responsible.
The investigation of the incident is ongoing at this time.
Everyone is reminded to unload weapons, lock them in a secure place or place a trigger lock on them when children are present. For more information on keeping your child safe from guns in the home or to find out how you could get a gun safety kit click here.
