CANYON, TEXAS -- West Texas A&M University is informing students on penalties they could pay if they are caught breaking the law online.
WTAMU is warning students to not share or download illegal music, movies, games, or any other copyright protected material from unauthorized sources.
The federal government is requiring universities to create awareness.
"College campuses are notorious for being the places that happens the most - the college students are more technically aware and we are out there sharing the the music and the movies -- the the main key students need to keep in mind and anyone needs to keep in mind is that downloading one song could cost up to $15,000 dollars," said WT Information Security Officer Lane Greene.
Greene goes on to say that if WTAMU doesn't implement these policies and inform students that they could possibly lose financial aid.
WTAMU also has penalties they will enforce for students committing this crime including losing privileges like internet access on their personal devices.
