Traffic stop uncovers half a million dollars in drugs

CARSON CO., TEXAS -- A DPS Trooper working patrol in Carson County confiscates more than 9,000 grams of cocaine.

The trooper stopped the vehicle on I-40, 3 miles east of Conway, for driving on the improved shoulder. The driver, Roberto Montoya, 48, and his passenger Francisco J. Uriarte, 43, both of Tucson, Arizona gave the trooper consent to search the vehicle. The search uncovered 9,088 grams of cocaine hidden inside of a hidden compartment at the rear of the vehicle. The drugs were valued at $663,424.

The driver and passenger were both arrested and booked into the Carson County jail for possession of a controlled substance. Those charges carry a first degree felony punishable by 10 years to life in prison and a $100,000 fine.
