AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Panhandle fields that were made lush and green by heavy rains earlier this year will soon be transformed into dead vegetation. That means our chances of wildfires will increase.
In just the last two days, county firefighters have responded on almost half a dozen fire calls near Amarillo. Randall county firefighters say you should clear brush and overgrowth at least 30 feet from your home, keep it wet when you can, and don't start burning without taking precautions.
Randall county fire Chief James Amerson, says before you conduct a controlled burn you need to notify authorities.
"First-call the sheriff's office, it's required. Notify them that you're doing a controlled burn, give them your address and keep the area around wet, have a hose stretched out and ready, and we encourage you not to burn on a windy day."
The chief also says that if your address is clearly marked it will help firefighters in locating the property if it becomes threatened.
