PORTALES, N.M. (AP) - Eastern New Mexico University will use a five-year federal grant to expand opportunities for Hispanic, low-income and graduate students.
The U.S. Department of Education has awarded Eastern more than $2.87 million as a Hispanic-serving institution.
The award to the Portales-based school was based on the percentage of Hispanic students, which was over 32 percent this fall.
The grant also is based on the school's large number of low-income students.
Over the lifetime of the grant, Eastern will substantially revise five master's degree programs to reach more working students in rural areas.
Eastern will develop online and on-campus services to support graduate students completing their degrees, particularly Hispanic and low-income students.
