AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Many cities across the state have done it, and now it looks like Amarillo could soon be joining the pack. That's making it illegal to use your cell phone while in a school zone.

Lawmakers passed a bill allowing individual cities to make it illegal to use a cell phone while in a school zone. It's already been outlawed in many of the districts across our area, including Bushland, Borger, and Pampa.

Amarillo city leaders said that they are interested in putting the law into effect, and they are going to have the Traffic Commission look into it. Mayor Debra McCartt said the commission will be wary of what happens in the upcoming legislative session.

"We've got to be careful to watch what the legislature is doing this year they may come down even stronger than what we are doing in the city of Amarillo, so we may have to go even further with our regulation on this."

If the signs do go up city leaders want a plan on where to begin installing the 410 signs that would be necessary for such a law.
