AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Update:

Amarillo police are saying injuries are life-threatening for one man after a major wreck. It happened Thursday afternoon in the West bound lanes of I-40 near Washington.

Police say a 1993 Chevrolet Suburban had been pulled over in the median apparently for a mechanical problem. Juan Navarrete,42, was looking under the hood when the suburban was hit in the rear by a 2002 Ford F-150.

Navarrete was transported with life threatening injuries to a local hospital.

The driver of the Ford, Rex Foster, 31, was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Six other people that were in the suburban also went to the hospital with assorted minor injuries.

Previously Reported:

A major wreck on I-40 just west of Washington has brought traffic to a halt on the interstate. The wreck happened just before five, Wednesday evening. Traffic was down to one lane on west bound I-40, and most vehicles are being rerouted to the access road.

Travelers are urged to avoid west bound travel on I-40 between the interchange and Georgia. We will have more information as it becomes available.
