AMARILLO, TEXAS -- The people who serve the Panhandle during disasters met Tuesday for an Emergency Preparedness Symposium.

Those unexpected disasters that bring together emergency responders, brought them together in a non-emergency setting to to make sure everyone's on the same page when it comes to responses.

From our annual bouts with grass fires to the tornadoes through severe storm season, getting responders aligned and everyone working toward the same goals can pay back big dividends.

And with everyone's safety as the top priority, working together is imperative to save lives.

"We have a great partnership, a great group of people working together in the Panhandle. While we're fortunate, working with emergency management, first responders, the media...it's very open and willing to participate in this type of workshop because we all have the same mission, and that's to protect lives," said John Brost, Meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

"It doesn't have to be a major disaster. It could be something minor like a small snow or a small chemical spill that may not have many impacts. Being that you have this team around you and provide them the expertise, that's what really is important and that's how you do things most effectively and respond most effectively."

The symposium was attended by emergency groups including Pantex, the Red Cross, the National Weather Service, area law enforcement personnel, and the FAA.
