AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Democrats in the Texas House are trying to hang on to gains they made in recent years against an oncoming Republican wave.
Republicans have a majority in the House now - but barely. The 150-member chamber is split 75-73 with two vacancies. The GOP grip could tighten after today's elections.
In Round Rock, first-term Democrat Rep. Diana Maldonado is facing a tough challenge from Republican graphic designer Larry Gonzales. The suburban district has long been considered a Republican stronghold. Maldonado saw an opening in 2008 when the longtime GOP incumbent decided not to seek re-election after he barely broke 50 percent in 2006.
The Associated Press reports the seat held by Republican Rep. Linda Harper Brown in Irving is considered a possible Democratic pickup. The lawmaker was the subject of an ethics complaint involving her use of a Mercedes-Benz owned by a company that makes millions through state transportation contracts.
A GOP sweep could determine whether moderate Republican Speaker Joe Straus wins another term in the face of a challenge from a more conservative candidate.
