AMARILLO, TX -- After three years of renovations in the downtown area...the work is just about completed south of the First Baptist Church in downtown Amarillo and ready to be unveiled to the public.
The entire project took old parking lots and asphalt streets, and combined the new archways, fountains, heated sidewalks, valet parking, more than a thousand lights, stained glass windows, statues and gardens into a four block area...all A-D-A compliant and ready for its ribbon cutting this weekend....with an emphasis on the serenity of an outdoor sanctuary, according to Dr. Howard Batson.
"We had leaking basements, we had a faulty parking lot, we were not handicap compliant, and we had all these needs and decided, if we're going to re-do it, let's re-do it in this sacred space that connected all of our building together with the sky as our ceiling...so that we have a coherent campus right here at 1st Baptist Church."
The ribbon cutting will be Sunday morning at 9:45 between services, and a lighting ceremony and tours are scheduled that evening beginning at 6:30.
