AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Tuesday, Pronews 7 told you about Faith City Ministries that talked about how the demand for their services have gone up. Wednesday, Pronews 7 found out they're not the only non-profit organization in need of your help. The holiday season is upon us and the Salvation Army and High Plains Food Bank are in dire need of your help. With the rocky economy, both organizations have seen an increase of families in need, which in turn, has created a higher demand for their services. The shelves at the food bank are currently bare. The food bank serves 165 agencies across the Panhandle and say they need donations especially heading into a season of need.

"We are virtually out of canned goods so that's a huge need right now we're coming out of a huge season of need and we're going into a huge season of need so it's a big deal," said Broc Carter, High Plains Food Bank Communication Director.

At the Salvation Army they've seen a record increase at the shelter.

"We've had a record number. We've had 5 different nights a thousand plus in our facility, the winter is adding the elements you've just got everything hitting at the same time with the economy," said Major Tim Grider, Salvation Army.

Both organizations say they're in dire need of volunteers, food and monetary donations. And without your help this holiday season, both say there will be families that will go without.

"The thing about the panhandle is that they're always generous to us around this time of year so I have no doubt that we're going to get these shelves filled, but they are very empty right now," said Carter.

"What we know that the usual trifecta is going to be different this year people usually do one of three things: donate funds, or they would donate gifts or they would donate their time we know it's going to be reversed," said Major Grider.

The Salvation Army says for their Thanksgiving day meal they're expecting to feed more than 700 people. The Salvation Army also reminds you that starting the weekend before Thanksgiving their kettles will be out in 24 different locations. To volunteer or donate call the Salvation Army at 373-6631. To donate to the High Plains Food Bank call or visit their location. Click on the highlighted words for a link.
