AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Many nursing graduates want to quit after their 1st year of being on the job. But a new grant hopes to make the transition from classroom to the job a little easier. Northwest Texas Healthcare System and Amarillo College got that new grant from the Texas Workforce Commission. It's for 2 years, and it's for $269,000. The hospital and the school will use the money to implement a 1-year Nursing Residency Program. And any nursing graduate from our area can take part. The idea behind it is to offer mentoring and extra on-the-job training to encourage them and make the transition a little less stressful.

"We want to help them get over that first year of,  'I have no idea what I am doing'  into a, 'you know, I feel confident in a hospital setting. I know what I am doing. I can take care of things'  and then they come out of that wanting to stay there," said Kim Crowly, Amarillo College.

10 nursing graduates will be introduced into the program for the 1st year, and it all starts next month.
