ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - Before University Arena can sell alcohol, it must get permission from Albuquerque lawmakers.
The City Council is set to take up alcohol sales at The Pit Monday afternoon.
City Council President Ken Sanchez tells KRQE-TV the University of New Mexico needs to apply for a waiver because the state statute doesn't allow alcohol sales within 30-feet of a school or church.
The Pit, University Stadium and the student union building on the UNM main campus are all on the agenda.
The school is proposing to only sell alcohol to a small percentage of people who attend games.
Only people in suites at the football and basketball games will have access to the alcohol. At the student union building, alcohol will only be sold at certain, specific events.
